There are lots of different reasons for seeking out counselling. I want to acknowledge that there can be feelings of uncertainty when making that first appointment.
But I also want to assure you that with the support of a skilled practitioner, this step has the potential to lead to positive change, improved well-being and a clearer understanding of your own personal values and needs.
As a registered Clinical Counsellor and Therapist, qualified in the use of expressive arts therapies, I bring to my practice:
- an empathetic person-centred approach
-evidence-based support for those experiencing trauma
-drawing on 10 years in private practice and my own lived experiences
-the benefits of mindfulness practice.
It is often said that our deepest feelings, emotions and memories can be too difficult, or too painful to access or that we simply can't find the right words to use. In these cases, my endeavour is not to re-traumatisise my client by delving into past events. Rather, exploring the here and now, finding therapeutic ways to process experiences and find new ways to help understand who we are and our place in the world.
I believe it is important to offer choice as to how we communicate in the therapeutic space. Choice for the client to feel in control and safe. Talking where needed, while also employing body-focused and expressive arts therapies, which are often referred to as 'bottom-up' or 'more-than-verbal methods'. These methods don't limit the client to a verbal description, yet can effectively identify 'the problem' or become a softer access to difficult emotions.
Recognising how important it is to work holistically with my clients, I do not follow a pre-set process; rather meet the client where they are at this point in time. Offering a gentle, grounding space where the client can feel safe enough to explore what they seek to understand or change.
My work is underpinned by my recognition that the client is the expert of their world, and the importance of trust in the client-counsellor connection.
I have completed further studies in Cancer Survivorship, Motivational Interviewing (MI), ASD & Neurodiversity, Narrative Therapy, Sensorimotor Guided Drawing®, Meditation, Contemplation & Imagery, Age Care & understanding Dementia and the NDIS.
Offering people the opportunity to meet me first to discuss their needs, for no fee, before making an appopintment, I look forward to meeting with you soon
